How did you feel when you first understood the assignment?
Encouraged and proud of our church. I had received an envelope and participated in this “Kingdom Assignment” many many years ago when we were on Wolf Road. This time I decided to use my own money.
How did you decide how/where you’d use the money?
I prayed that God would show me who He wanted to bless through me. I follow a local ministry on Facebook called “Grace’s Closet” which is run by a woman named Grace. A couple of days after the challenge was given in church she had posted that there was a woman who was in need of size 11 sneakers. I happen to wear size 11 sneakers!! This was a sign! I thought about giving this woman my pair. They were not that old and I could buy myself a new pair. Then I thought about the challenge. I found out that Kaitlyn (not her real name) was a teen Mom with a young baby from a broken home who had recently gotten a job working at a restaurant and she needed some good sneakers for work. I would give her the $100 and the dignity of picking out a pair of NEW sneakers of HER CHOOSING.
How did you use the money?
Grace got me in touch with the woman, named Karen, who had reached out to Grace’s Closet on behalf of but unbeknownst to Kaitlyn. Karen met me at my house to pick up a note of encouragement I had written to Kaitlyn and the gift. I explained to Karen about the Compassion Challenge and she had tears in her eyes- so thankful that this young woman would have her need met. The letter read “Dear Kaitlyn, I heard that you might need a pair of sneakers for your job. Please accept this gift and pick out a pair that you like. I just wanted you to know that Jesus sees you and loves you and that there are people all around you that care. I am praying for you and hope the job works out. With love, Stephanie”. Karen texted me after she delivered the envelope to Kaitlyn. She wrote “She started crying and said she feels like stuff like that only happens on TV. She was very grateful.” I love how God used all three of us- Karen, Grace, and I to bless this young woman and in turn we each were blessed to be used in this way.
